Who we are

Infantry Blockhouse MO-S5 “Na trati” forms part of the Czechoslovak border fortification system that was built in 1935–1938. The bunker is situated near Starý Bohumín, and is, thus, part of the Moravská Ostrava construction section, sub-section Bohumín.

As far as its construction is concerned, it is an atypical two-sided separate infantry blockhouse of the 3rd degree of resistance, two-storey high. The construction company of Dr Ing Karel Skorkovský from Prague won the public contract for its construction. The concreting works took place in July 1936 and lasted two weeks. Altogether, 4.314 cu m of concrete was used to build the bunker.

Originally, the bunker was equipped with two anti-tank guns and four separate heavy machine guns placed in shooting rooms. This equipment was complemented by a heavy and light machine gun in two infantry bells, three light machine guns placed in auxiliary loopholes and six grenade tubes.

The bunker was manned by soldiers of the 1st Company, I. Battalion of the 4th Border Regiment. Combat crew consisted of 42 soldiers; in peace, the crew was half the size. Additionally, the combat crew was commanded by two officers, and there were three artillery observers.

In 1938, the area of Bohumín was, as part of Cieszyn region, occupied by Poles, and the bunker had a Polish crew. In September 1939, the Poles withdrew without a fight, and Germany acquired the region and the bunker itself. After 1945, the structure was abandoned. Since 1999, the Bohumín Military History Club (KVH Bohumín, z.s.) has been in charge of the bunker.
